How to Wear Your Doctoral Graduation Gown

Wearing your doctoral graduation gown properly ensures you look your best on this special day. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to wear it correctly.

1. Hang Up Your Gown Immediately

Once you receive your gown, hang it up on a hanger to avoid wrinkles. Avoid washing or dry cleaning it, as these processes can damage the fabric. If needed, use a cool iron or steam to remove any creases.

2. Zip Up Your Gown

The gown should have a zipper at the front. Zip it up fully to ensure the gown stays securely in place. The sleeves should fall just below the elbow and above the palm, while the hemline should fall between your knee and ankle.

3. Wear the Hood Correctly

  • Velvet Side Out: When putting on your hood, make sure the velvet side is facing outward. The velvet represents the field of your doctorate, so it should be visible.
  • Swing the Hood Over Your Shoulders: Place your palm under the section of the hood that rests on your neck, and swing it over your head onto your shoulders.
  • Adjust the Hood: Ensure the hood is draped around your neck, with the largest portion hanging down your back.
  • Expose the Satin Lining: To show off your school colors, ask a friend to help straighten the hood, then fold the velvet portion back to reveal the colorful satin lining.

4. Fasten the Hood Securely

  • Back Cord: There is a cord at the back of the hood that should be fastened to a button on your gown to prevent the hood from sliding off your shoulders.
  • Front Cord: For comfort and security, fasten the front cord of the hood to the button inside the gown on your left side, next to the zipper.

5. Adjust Your Cap

  • Position the Cap: The cap should sit flat and level on your head, with the front of the cap (marked by the crown) positioned 1 inch above your eyebrows.
  • Tassel Position: The tassel should be on the left side, near your temple. It’s traditional to move it to the right side after the ceremony, symbolizing the transition from student to graduate.
